Once you ride English, picking a horse saddle pads is reduced to the basic task of deciding on a shade. It's so easy. But western saddle pads are a whole different story. You can find orthopedic pads, pads with inserts, foam, wool felt, fleece, neoprene plus much more. Varying thicknesses and combination's of the various materials accustomed to make the pads only contributes to the confusion. You hate to waste cash on a high priced pad, so here are a few tips on how to choose the best one.

When locating a saddle pad in your horse after which getting a ride, the smartest thing that may happen is basically that you pull it off and the whole back is wet with sweat without any dry spots. This means the pressure is being applied evenly and the sweat glands are being permitted to work effectively. Possibly dry spots, then those areas are getting a lot of pressure and ultimately the tissue in those spots will die should you not correct the problem.

Try using a thinner pad, and if that does not work you may need a new saddle.

Don't get worried though, should your horse's spine is dry once you accomplish the saddle pad after a ride. This means air was flowing across the gullet since it is intended to do. This is how her back stays cool while you are working her out.

Before you purchase an expensive saddle pad, consider using a generic wool felt saddle blanket first. Those have been about for years for a good reason. They work great the majority of the time if the saddle fits properly. Get your horse nice sweaty on a fast trail ride to see how he acts. If he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable and his awesome back is completely wet when you're done with no regions of dryness, then that wool pad is sufficient.

A saddle pad cannot create a poorly-fitting saddle your style, which is where it gets confusing when attemping to pick a saddle pad. It is designed to diffuse heat whilst sweat out of your saddle so that it will last longer. That's all it was supposed to do, when you find it isn't "fixing" an issue, then the real option is to secure a better-fitting saddle.
